Bogor, West Java and Ketapang, West Kalimantan | April 21 – May 3, 2025
The Rainforest and Peatlands Fire Centre of Excellence, under the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University, successfully held the Fire Simulation and Peat Fire Control Training, an international capacity-building program aimed at strengthening technical expertise and collaboration in managing peatland fires.
Held across two key locations—Bogor (West Java) and Ketapang (West Kalimantan)—from April 21 to May 3, 2025, the training brought together participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, and the Philippines.
Participants from Indonesia included representatives from:
-
Manggala Agni (Indonesian Forest Fire Brigade),
-
Directorate of Forest Fire Control, Ministry of Forestry (MoF),
-
Jambi Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD Jambi Province),
- West Sumatra Provincial Forestry Office,
-
South Sumatra Provincial Forestry Office, and
-
West Kalimantan Provincial Environment and Forestry Office.
This program was made possible through the support of key partners, including the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO), Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (France), Regional Fire Management Resource Center – Southeast Asia (RFMRC-SEA), and the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University.
The training included both classroom and field-based activities, focusing on:
-
Fire simulation using advanced technology,
-
Peatland fire prevention and suppression strategies,
-
Early detection systems and rapid response mechanisms,
-
Knowledge exchange and collaborative planning across countries.
“We aim to build a stronger network of regional champions who can lead proactive and science-based forest fire management efforts—especially in peatland ecosystems which are critical both environmentally and climatologically,” said Prof. Bambang Hero Saharjo, forest fire expert at IPB University and Director of RFMRC-SEA.
This program not only enhanced technical capacities but also fostered cross-border collaboration and shared learning to address one of the region’s most pressing environmental challenges: peatland fires and their global impact on air quality and climate change.
