Bogor, June 24, 2024 – IPB University has marked another historic milestone with the official inauguration of the Rainforests and Peatlands Fires Centre of Excellence, a specialized training room equipped with a state-of-the-art Fire Simulator—the first and only of its kind in Southeast Asia.
This cutting-edge facility is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University, and the Embassy of France in Indonesia, aimed at equipping forest fire professionals and students with advanced skills in managing and extinguishing forest and peatland fires.
Prof. Bambang Hero Saharjo, one of Indonesia’s leading experts in forest and land fires, emphasized the significance of the Fire Simulator. “This simulator is a game-changer—it’s the only one in Southeast Asia and plays a crucial role in building the capabilities of firefighting teams. We’re no longer just talking about theory—we’re simulating real-life fire scenarios,” he said.
The simulator was previously launched by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Prof. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, on March 27, 2024, at IPB University. With the opening of the dedicated training center, its use is now expanding beyond professionals to include student training as well.
The initiative has also garnered praise from international partners. Jean-Michel Dumaz, Regional Civil Protection and Crisis Management Attaché for Indo-Pacific Countries at the French Embassy in Singapore, highlighted the dedication behind the project.
“This simulator was made possible through a partnership initiated by Prof. Bambang. It reflects his deep commitment to advancing fire management efforts in Indonesia, especially in tackling forest and peatland fires,” said Dumaz.
Beyond training professionals, the facility is seen as a crucial educational tool. Dr. Fitriya Nur Annisa Dewi, Ph.D, from IPB University’s Directorate of Global Connectivity, expressed how the simulator bridges the gap between theory and practice. “This is a major step forward in using technology to train future forest firefighters. It also provides students with hands-on experience in simulated fire conditions,” she said.
Dr. Nandi Kosmaryandi, Vice Dean of Resources, Collaboration, and Development at the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, echoed this sentiment. “We are deeply grateful for this facility. It’s not just a boost for firefighting teams—it’s also a learning space for our students to develop practical skills using the latest technology,” he stated.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several prominent figures from IPB University, including Prof. Cecep Kusmana, Bayu Winata, M.Si from the Department of Silviculture, and representatives from the Faculty and the Directorate of Global Connectivity.
With the launch of the Rainforests and Peatlands Fires Centre of Excellence, IPB University reaffirms its commitment to leading forest fire management education and innovation in Indonesia and the Southeast Asian region.
In the face of climate change and rising forest fire incidents, this training center symbolizes a new hope—a future where forest protection is smarter, stronger, and rooted in science and collaboration.
So, if you’re passionate about the environment or pursuing a career in forestry, maybe it’s time to look at IPB University—because here, the future of our forests is being built with knowledge, innovation, and global partnerships.
